We are less than a month away from the start of Euro Cup 2012. Just like in the 2004 Euro Cup, Greece will once again be opening up the tournament when they take on one of the co-host nations in Poland on June 8th. For the next month we will be getting you ready for the Euro Cup as we profile Greece and discuss with you the road it took them to get to where they are, what we can expect from them in the coming tournament and talk about the individual players and team.

We begin by taking a look back at how they stamped their ticket for Euro 2012: the Qualification round. Greece finished atop of their group with 24 points: 7 victories, 3 draws and 0 defeats with a plus 9 goal differential. They were one of only five teams in the tournament to go undefeated and tied for fourth in goals against by only allowing 5 goals. Let’s take a look back at their qualification run and showcase the top 5 goals for the Greek team:

5. Torosidis in the 94th minute!

After staying level at 0-0 with Malta for 90 minutes it took the Greeks till the last minute in extra time to score the winning goal. Captain Karagounis would take the free kick and shoot it on net. The ball would be cleared out only to land in front of Mitroglou who shot it on net. The ball bounced off of the ground and into the air where Torosidis was in a great position to head it in and put the Greeks up 1-0 and seal the all important victory.

4. Salpingidis with the Chipped Goal

Salpingidis provided a highlight reel goal in the game against Israel at home to give Greece an important goal as they went on to win the game 2-1. Salpingidis would receive a thru-ball from one of the Greek players and was running towards the ball as the Israeli goalkeeper was coming out to play the ball. With two players on him Salpigidis realized his only chance for scoring would be to chip it over the keeper and he did just that scoring a beautiful chipped goal.

3. Torosidis Great Individual Effort

In their 3rd game of the tournament Torosidis nice individual play scored the game’s only goal to give Greece an important 1-0 victory at home against Latvia. After passing mid-field Torosidis deeked out a Latvian player, played one two with Katsouranis, then curved the ball into the top left corner of the net. Great goal by one of the team’s great players.

2. Samaras with the ‘goal’

In Greece’s 2nd last game of the tournament against group leaders Croatia, Greece needed a victory to leap frog Croatia in the standings and to essentially guarantee their place atop the group and a ticket to Euro 2012. In the 70th minute Georgios Samaras scored the go ahead goal to put Greece ahead 1-0. After a corner kick taken by Karagounis was cleared back to him, he resent in a cross which was knocked to the top of the 18 yard box where Samaras with a left foot strike buried the ball into the back of the Croatian net.

1. Ninis the Magician!

One of Greece’s up and coming young players, Sotiris Ninis, put on a terrific display in Israel as he deeked out five Israeli players and shot the ball just outside the 18 yard box past the keeper to score Greece’s only goal as they went on to defeat Israel 1-0.  That wonder goal was the youngsters best one yet in his short career.
